Airplanes - Information and History

Here are a few websites I've found for: everything you ever wanted to know about domestic airplane crashes, cost of an airplane, or just interested in trivia concerning airplanes. I've only flown on two flights, one going and one coming back. Another passenger next to me, on the outgoing flight, made the comment: "this is the smoothest flight I've ever had". I thought about that on the flight back and that was my last flight. Both smooth, both safe and comfortable, but never again for this one. However, I find airplanes, flights, and all the people and things they move around the world just fascinating. So, if you need a break, check out some of the websites listed below:

Air and Cargo Plane Crashes http://www.planecrashinfo.com/

There are many more, famous and infamous. Airplanes do fly millions of safe miles. So why are so many crashes still occurring?

Bloomberg's take on Aircraft Manufacturers

Aircraft Manufacturers from the past to present http://shanaberger.com/aircraft_by_mfg.htm

And finally a question posed on answers.yahoo about why a plane can't also float in water. Interesting and informative answers.http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101126232022AAV0gpT

Hope you enjoyed this bit of flight fancy! Feel free to add any other website addresses that are about airplanes.

Soaring like an eagle, from the earliest days it was a dream, and along with many others who attempted flying in the sky, the Wright brothers made dreams come true.

I recall describing the size of a B 29 to my grand dad, He wouldn't believe it. He was born in the 1870s and was just overloaded by the technology 0f the 1960s. He passed away at 94.

I served in the US Navy during the transition of props to jets, (1950s) Everything in our aircraft at that time was analog and radar interpretation was done by experience and guessing. To this day, there are a number of recip aircraft I can identify by sound.

Back then, navigation was an art and now, we just turn on the GPS... Thanks for the seed!

You're welcome, both my dad + several other family members and hubby all made those "trips". My uncle was in the AF in WWII also. Ah, the jets and naval carriers, it was a learning experience. A neighbor's boy was on that carrier where the bomb fell off or went off from a jet and killed a lot of navy seamen on the deck. My son is on a warship right now, that exercise in Korean waters. sighhh He went from seaman to LtJg. Has a good wife who has his back lol big smile for her...hmmm might do one on "boats" I know I know they are called Ships with a capitol S.

I like to collect bits of information here and there and was thinking there are others that like it too, they just don't have as much time to surf the net for it. lol

      Requests taken of course....

Thanks for the information. I would also like to contribute this sad story found at http://legaltimes.typepad.com/blt/2010/11/top-texas-advocate-dies-in-plane-crash.html about Top Texas Advocate Dies in Plane Crash.

How sad, fog the bain of small plane pilots. The article mentions the crash was just 200 yards short of the shore and close to the Destin Airport. It must be a bad area, Eglin AF base was tracking the plane. What a loss for the family and friends.

In the US Navy, during the fifties, I was in an Electronics C school down in Norfolkand ran in to an old acquaintance. His squadron was doing upgrades on their AJ Savages. I got to assist him on a plug change on its two R2800 radials. This was the Navy’s first nuclear capable carrier based aircraft. It also had a centrifugal jet engine mounted high in the fuselage, atmospheric operated intake door. This bird had “funny” landing gear that allowed the aircraft to jump forward a foot or so during engine run-up! Scared the crap out of me! I thought it had broken its tie downs! Another fairly rare aircraft of the period was the F7F Tiger, also twin recip. I believe it failed carrier qualifications and was relegated to utility work such as target tow. At Quonset Point we also had Martin P5M seaplanes. A HUGE twin engine aircraft belonging to a VP squadron.

My anti-sub squadron flew Grumman S2Fs, from straight decks and later from canted decks and finally the (British) mirror landing system was implemented! Far fewer accidents on landing and the removal of hydraulic catapults cut down on accidents also. The only serious accidents I ever saw involved helicopters. They were still operating blimp squadrons in the fifties...you don't want to know what we called blimps...
